The Crown of Thorns

Science Daily has reported that the NASA/ESA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured this image of NGC 7049, a mysterious looking galaxy on the border between spiral and elliptical galaxies. NGC 7049 is found in the constellation of Indus, and is the brightest of a cluster of galaxies, a so-called Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG).

Scientists, not theologians, gave NGC 7049 the nickname "The Crown of Thorns." The nickname comes from the well-known scene in the Bible account of the death of Jesus.

"Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed in His right Hand. And kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' And they spit on Him and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe and put His own clothes on Him and led Him away to crucify Him" (Matthew 27:27-31).

The God who created the Universe and all it contains, including NGC 7049, is the same God who "made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee would bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:7-11).

It is this same majestic and holy God before whom you will stand one-day to give an account of your life. He will judge your every thought, word, and deed. To see how you will do on that day, please carefully consider the following.

Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen? Have you ever taken God’s name in vain? Have you ever murdered in your heart by hating another person or by being angry without cause? Then, according to God’s perfect and holy standard, you are a lying, thieving, blasphemous, murderer at heart. The Bible says, “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31)—the God who created you and before whom you will one day stand.

If God finds you guilty of breaking His Law, then He must punish you. And the punishment for sinning against God is eternity in hell (Revelation 21:8). But there is good news! God has provided a way for you to be rescued from His wrath to come.

Two thousand years ago, God the Father sent His Son Jesus Christ (fully God and fully man) to this earth (John 1:14). He lived the perfect life that you cannot live. He was nailed to a cross, shed His blood, and died taking upon Himself the wrath of God sinners deserve (Mark 15:22-26). Three days later, He rose from the dead defeating sin and death. As a result of Jesus Christ's perfect life, shed blood, death, burial, and resurrection, God grants forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe (John 3:16). But in order for this to happen, Jesus said you must be "born again" (John 3:3). Being born again is a supernatural work that only God can do when He gives you a new heart and dwells in you in the person of the Holy Spirit. This change results in a hunger for righteousness that will cause you to repent, turn from your sins, and put your faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Look again at "The Crown of Thorns" galaxy. Although recently discovered by mankind, it has sat in the heavens millions of light-years from Earth, since God spoke the Universe into existence. You are but a speck on a planet that is a mere speck, in a vast Universe that God holds in the palm of His hand. Your life is but a vapor. You have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Will you even awake in the morning? Repent and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ while you still have time. Read the Bible every day and obey what it says.

Three Oakland Officers Murdered, One Listed In Grave Condition

Three Oakland police officers were killed and one was gravely wounded yesterday in two related incidents. The assailant was subsequently killed by officers.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the slain and wounded officers and the greater Oakland law enforcement family. As a retired deputy sheriff I, too, mourn their loss. Although I did not know these officers, they are part of my family.

I also extend my thoughts and prayers to family members of the murderer. While justice for the murderer was appropriately swift and certain (Romans 13:1-5), he likely leaves behind at least some grieving family members who, unlike him, are law-abiding citizens.

As I read the San Francisco Chronicle article about the incident, I was drawn to the quoted statement of a citizen by the name of Mark Green who lives in the area where the tragedy happened. Green was quoted as saying, "It's sad. I'll tell you this much, I'm going to church tonight."

I don't presume to know Mr. Green's spiritual condition. Maybe he's a born again follower of Jesus Christ. Maybe he's a religious man. Maybe he doesn't ascribe to any particular faith tradition. What drew me to Mr. Green's statement is the important reality it expressed. When tragedy strikes, whether or not a person is directly involved, such events often cause people to think about their own mortality.

As a 20-year law enforcement veteran, I can assure you that while the slain and wounded officers planned to go home at the end of their shift, they lived daily with the reality that the next traffic stop or call for service could be their last. Tragically and sadly, that stark reality came to fruition yesterday in the lives of these brave and noble Oakland officers.

What about you? Where do your thoughts take you when you hear about tragedies like this or when tragedy strikes closer to home? Do you simply shrug your shoulders with cold indifference and say, "oh well"? Or do you place yourself in the tragedy, trying to determine in your mind what those directly involved were thinking and feeling during their last moments in this life? Do you ever find yourself asking, "Where are they now?"

If you are the first person, then you are either a liar or your conscience is so seared that you may be beyond help. If you are the second person and your conscience is functioning as it should, then I would like to share something with you.

Most people, when they hear of or experience loss cannot help but to think, "What if that had been me?" Tragedy brings us face-to-face with the reality that ten out of ten people die. Every one of us started the dying process the moment we were born. Our existence, however, does not cease when our physical life draws to a close, whether that happens suddenly and unexpectedly or after a long and seemingly fruitful life.

The Bible teaches that our life is but a vapor--a mist that is here today and gone tomorrow. However, our soul lives on forever. The Bible also says that it is appointed for a person to die once, and after that comes the judgment. You will stand before God when you leave this life and He will judge your every thought, word, and deed. The standard by which God will judge you will not be your own standard built upon your own perceived goodness. He will not weigh the good things you think you have done against the bad things you have done--many of which you have likely minimized and justified in your mind.

The standard by which God will judge you is summarized in the Ten Commandments--His Moral Law.

If you have ever told a lie, God will judge you to be a liar. If you have ever stolen anything, God will judge you to be a thief. If you have ever taken His holy name in vain, God will judge you to be a blasphemer. If you have ever looked at someone other than a spouse and entertained a sexual, lustful thought, God will judge you to be an adulterer. If you have ever been angry with another person without cause; if you have ever hated anyone; if you have ever so much as called someone a fool or an idiot, then God will judge you to be a murderer.

If you still think you can circumvent the Law of God by doing good works or by holding on to the false notion that you are a good person; if you think you can make yourself right with God and enter heaven by meriting God's favor, then to accomplish this all you have to do is be absolutely perfect in thought, word, and deed from birth to death.

So, how have you done so far?

When you die and stand before God, if He finds you guilty of breaking His Law so much as once, He will punish your sin. And the punishment God has ascribed for sin is eternity in hell. God will punish your sin because He is holy, righteous, just, and good.

I hope the thought of standing before God on the Day of Judgment clothed only in the filthy rags of your sin and self-righteousness concerns you. I hope the thought of spending eternity in hell as the just punishment for your sins against God frightens you. I hope you care more for your eternal soul than your fleeting physical existence. If so, then your conscience is at work, and that's a good thing.

Here's the good news.

God has provided only one way to escape His just and holy wrath. It's not by being religious. It's not be trying to be a good person. And it's not by ignoring the realities of who God is and what He requires of you. Your only hope is this.

Two thousand years ago, God the Father sent His Son to earth in the person of Jesus Christ--fully God and fully man, yet without sin. Unlike you and me, Jesus never once transgressed the Law of God in thought, word, or deed. He was perfect. He was the God-Man, the sinless Lamb of God. He was born of a virgin, just as Isaiah the prophet said He would be, 750 years before Jesus' birth.

Having lived the perfect, sinless life, Jesus voluntarily went to the cross. He suffered and died a horrific and bloody death on the cross, shedding His innocent blood. In doing so, He took upon Himself the punishment you deserve for your sins against God. God the Father poured out His just and holy wrath against sin upon His innocent Son. Jesus then forever defeated sin and death when He rose from the dead three days later. He is alive today and He will return at a time of the Father's choosing.

God has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness. And what He commands of you is that you repent and turn away from your sin. He commands that you submit to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Jesus said that unless a person is born again they cannot see the kingdom of God. If God causes you to be born again (literally born from above) and extends to you the free gift of eternal life that only He can give, then as a result you will repent and you will receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

On the cross, that ghastly instrument of torture and death, a great exchange took place for those who God draws to Himself and to whom He extends the precious gifts of repentance and faith. Jesus literally takes their place of judgment. For the sake of those who repent and believe, God the Father made His Son who knew no sin to be sin on their behalf, so that in Jesus they might become the righteousness of God. Instead of being seen by God clothed only in the filthy rags of sin, as a result of Jesus Christ's finished work on the cross and His glorious resurrection the born again follower of Christ is seen by God as clothed in the beautiful garments of Jesus Christ's righteousness.

My hope and prayer for you is that you will repent, turn from your sin, and believe the gospel. My hope and prayer is that God would allow that great exchange to occur in your life--that you will spend eternity with the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. My hope and prayer is that God will not give you what you deserve for your sins against Him--eternity in hell.

Obey the commands of God! Repent and believe the gospel!

If God--the only true God who is gracious, merciful, kind, and loving--saves you, obey what God commands of the true follower of Jesus Christ. Be baptized as a testimony of your faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is not a work that leads to salvation. Baptism is a fruit of salvation--something a Christian does after they have received the free gift of eternal life.

Read the Bible--the Word of God--and obey what it says.

Find a good church where the Bible is taught verse-by-verse and become an active, growing member of the Body of Christ.

The Result of Not Paying Attention

Shortly after I arrived at my Living Waters office this morning, I heard the sounds of sirens. My commitment whenever I hear sirens is to stop whatever I am doing (when practical) and pray for the first responders and the people to whom they will render aid or help in some other way.

This morning the sirens seemed particularly close. So, I walked out of my office toward the back door of the building. When I got there, Sue Comfort was already looking out the sliding glass door. She, too, had come out of her office to see what was going on. We watched as a paramedic truck rolled down the street and appeared to slow just out of our field of view.

I grabbed my bag (complete with tracts, camera, and digital recorder) and headed toward the last place I saw the paramedic truck.

As I rounded the corner into the parking lot of a small strip mall, this is what I saw. Two badly damaged vehicles were in the parking lot; along with tow trucks, fire and paramedic vehicles, and a CHP cruiser.

EMT's, paramedics, and firefighters attended to two injured people. I walked around the parking lot, snapping a few photos along the way, while making sure not to interfere with the work of the first responders.

I handed out a few tracts to the tow truck drivers and a man named Jim. Jim was the friend of one of the people being carted away in an ambulance. He received a call from his friend telling him that she had been in an accident. According to Jim, neither of the parties in the more damaged vehicle were seriously injured.

I asked Jim if he knew what happened. According to Jim, his friend was making her way down the freeway when she came across slowing traffic. Folks wanted to see the aftermath of an earlier motorcycle accident. Apparently the person traveling behind Jim's friend was not paying attention to the road in front of him and rear ended Jim's friend's vehicle.

(Note: While the condition of the vehicles clearly pointed to a rear end collision, I could not confirm if the cause of the accident was inattention on the part of one of the drivers, or something else.)

Inattention on busy southern California freeways can have terrible, even fatal, consequences. But there is an inattention of another kind that, if not corrected, will have eternal consequences--the inattention of the conscience.

God has blessed every person with a conscience, which enables a person to discern right from wrong. "In that they show the works of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus" Romans 2:15-16).

Unfortunately, because of their love for sin, people choose to ignore the law written on their hearts. "But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears from hearing. They made their hearts like flint so they could not hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets; therefore great wrath came from the Lord of hosts" (Zechariah 7:11-12).

Does this describe you? Have you so ignored your conscience that you consider yourself to be a good person? There is a simple way to see if you are good in God's eyes. Answer the following questions, honestly.

God the Father sent His sinless Son, Jesus Christ (God in the flesh), to take upon Himself the punishment you rightly deserve for your sins against God when He shed His innocent blood and died on the cross. Three days later He forever defeated death when He rose from the grave. To receive the free gift of eternal life, Jesus said sinners must be born again (John 3:3, 7). If God causes you to be born again, you will recognize that you cannot save yourself. You will repent (turn away from your sins) and put your trust and faith in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. You will pass from death into life and receive the free gift of eternal life.

I hope you are paying attention. Repent and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ. Read the Bible every day and obey what it says.

Drive-By at Filmore and Woodale

Shortly after 5:00 PM this evening, an otherwise quiet day was shattered by a hail of gunfire. The incident occurred at the corner of Filmore and Woodale, in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Arleta (San Fernando Valley).

Two men were standing at the rear of this car when another vehicle pulled alongside them. Words were exchanged and then at least five shots were fired from at least one of the vehicle's occupants. One of the two men standing at the back of the car was hit multiple times, with the last round striking the victim in the head. The other man was unharmed.

Note: as of the time of this post the wounded man is in grave condition at Holy Cross Hospital. Please pray for the wounded man, the witnesses, the officers and detectives who are working the case, and the first responders who ran toward the gunfire instead of away from it.

The man pictured above watched as his friend was viciously gunned down. I wonder what he was thinking when Chris Yarzab took this photo. What would you be thinking? What are you thinking after reading this story and seeing these pictures? Do you pause and consider your own mortality-- the frailty of your life?

The one thing that we can be certain of in this life is that life is uncertain. The 22-year-old man that is clinging to life after being shot in the head had absolutely no idea that in a moment, in the blink of an eye, he would go from seemingly healthy to near death.

"Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will never again see good. The eye of him who sees me will behold me no more; while your eyes are on me, I shall be gone. As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up; he returns nor more to his house, nor does his place know him anymore" (Job 7:7-10).

"For my days pass away like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace" (Psalm 102:3).

"Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes" (James 4:14).

When your days in this life end, the days of eternity will begin. Most people do not concern themselves with such things. They either believe that they have plenty of time to deal with it. Or, they look in the mirror, see a good person, and determine that when they die and stand before God He will see them as they see themselves. Or, their thoughts are a combination of the two.

Praying Code-3

There's nothing like rolling code-3. There's not a roller coaster in existence that matches the adrenalin rush of heading to a priority call, with lights and siren activated.

And what about you? What do you think when you see a patrol car, fire truck, or ambulance in your rear view mirror, coming toward you at a very high rate of speed? Does your heart skip a beat? Come on. Admit it. You start to breathe a little heavier, and your pulse quickens.

But do you pray?

Do you pray for those officers who are rushing to a domestic violence call or a crime in progress? Do you pray, right then and there, for the firefighters and paramedics who are rushing to a medical emergency, fire, or traffic collision?

While you may not be able to roll code-3 like a first responder, you can certainly pray code-3. And that's exactly what I am challenging you to do.

Whenever you see first responders rolling code-3, please stop what your doing (if practical and safe) and pray. Or whenever you come across a scene in which first responders are present, stop what you are doing and pray.

Pray for their safe travel. Pray also for the safety of other motorists and pedestrians in their path.

Pray that the Lord gives them wisdom, discernment, courage, and compassion beyond measure as they enter situations ranging from the mundane to the horrific.

Pray that the Lord would use the critical incident to draw the first responders and the civilians involved to either a closer walk with Christ (if they are saved) or to contemplate their eternal destination as they are forced to face (or at least consider) their own mortality.

Pray that there would be someone on-scene to proclaim the Law and the Gospel to them. Pray that the person who heralds that message might be you.

Pray as the Holy Spirit leads.

In addition to praying, keep you car stocked with tracts and other resources so that if you stop at the scene (again, if it is practical and safe), you can minister to those who are present.

So, I hope you will join me in Praying Code-3 for the first responder community and those they serve during critical incidents.

Traffic Collision at Brand and Broadway

Chris and I were on Brand Boulevard (Glendale) last night with the rest of our evangelism team. At one point, I looked to the north and saw the unmistakable lights of a couple of patrol cars. I got Chris's attention and we made our way up the street. Once there we saw that there had been a traffic collision. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Spiritual Drunkenness

There was a call to 911 early Saturday morning. A woman appeared to be dead on the side of the road, on El Dorado Avenue, in Pacoima (CA). Officers from LAPD-Foothill Division initially responded to the scene and discovered the woman was alive, but under the influence of alcohol. She also had an injury to her arm, so paramedics were called to the scene.

Two fire trucks soon arrived and began treating the woman for cuts to the back of her forearm and elbow. A fire fighter at the scene said that the woman had been drinking all night and had passed out on the curb. A passerby saw her and thought she might be dead because she wasn't moving; so they called 911.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the woman put up a struggle with fire fighters. She didn't want to go to the hospital. She was finally put onto a stretcher and taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries.

The woman's drunken condition made her oblivious to the fact that she was in need of help. So, too, is the case with all people who are spiritually drunk with sin. The Bible says that people drink up sin like a thirsty person drinks water (see Job 15:16 and 34:7-9).

If you wonder how much you love, thirst, and chase after sin, then ask yourself the following questions:

Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen? Have you ever taken God’s name in vain? Have you ever murdered in your heart by hating another person or by being angry without cause? Then, according to God’s perfect and holy standard, you are a lying, thieving, blasphemous, murderer at heart. The Bible says, “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31)—the God who spoke the Universe into existence.

If God finds you guilty of breaking His Law, then He must punish you. And the punishment for sinning against God is eternity in hell (Revelation 21:8). But there is good news! God has provided a way for you to be rescued.

God the Father sent His sinless Son, Jesus Christ (God in the flesh), to take upon Himself the punishment you rightly deserve for your sins against God when He shed His innocent blood and died on the cross. Three days later He forever defeated death when He rose from the grave. To receive the free gift of eternal life, Jesus said you must be born again (John 3:3, 7). If God causes you to be born again, you will recognize that you cannot save yourself. You will repent (turn away from your sins) and put your trust and faith in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. You will pass from death into life and receive the free gift of eternal life.

It's time to sober up. Repent and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ. Read the Bible every day and obey what it says.
